A Basic Guide to the Notebook-Making Process
-
Paper Selection
It starts with choosing the right paper for the job. At Beech Tree Paper, we offer: Standard (20# / 75 GSM) or Heavyweight (24 or 28# / 90 or 105 GSM)
-
Printing the Pages
Sheets of paper are printed with your chosen page style before any cutting happens. Options include lined, dot grid, graph, wide-ruled, blank, and custom layouts.
-
Printing the Cover
For custom logo and branded orders, your artwork is printed directly onto the cover stock at this stage — every custom order receives a digital proof for approval before printing begins.
-
Binding
This is where loose pages become a notebook. We use machine binding, in one of two styles:
Stapled (Saddle Stitch): Pages are folded and stapled through the spine. Simple and affordable.
Wire-Bound (Twin-Loop): A metal coil runs through punched holes. Pages fold back completely flat, making it ideal for active note-taking and field use. -
Cutting and Trimming
Printed sheets are stacked and cut to size. Accuracy matters or the finished notebook won't look or feel right.
-
Packing and Shipping
Orders are packed and shipped from Grand Haven, Michigan. Most custom orders ship within 7 business days after proof approval. Paper scraps from the production process are donated to local Michigan charities rather than going to the landfill.
Every cover is made from recycled materials. Every scrap goes to a local charity. That's not a footnote — it's how we run our workshop.
What Makes Beech Tree Paper Different
Most promotional notebooks are manufactured overseas — which means longer lead times, less visibility into materials and processes, and more shipping miles. We manufacture everything in Grand Haven, Michigan, which means you know exactly where your notebooks came from and how they were made.
It also means when you have a question, you're talking to the people who actually make your notebooks — not a customer service department on the other side of the globe.
